Lime Mortar

Quarried Limestone Wall, Hill House, Isle la Motte , Vermont

Lime Plaster on Adobe Brick, Rancho Las Flores

Lime mortars were used for the bedding and pointing of masonry walls for centuries before the introduction of Portland cement based mortars.

Portland cement mortars are harder stronger and cure much more quickly then lime mortars which make them very attractive to a fast paced profit driven building industry. However, while Portland cement has its uses, its qualities are not ideally suited either for the repair or construction of traditional masonry buildings.

Lime mortars are enjoying a renaissance.
